A Word From The Board - August 2011
|
It’s
hard to believe the end of the second term is fast approaching.
The Board has been proactive in ensuring we are effective in all areas
of governance. During our last meeting we incorporated a brainstorming
‘To go forward we first retreat’ session with expectations, review of
operations and responsibilities all discussed.
We have
so far this year received curriculum reports on – Charter, Annual Plan
which included targets for this year and a review of Learning
Languages. These reports identify groups of students that are not
achieving, at risk of not achieving, those achieving and those
achieving very well. It is very pleasing to note the progress our
students are making and that as a school we are doing the best that we
can for all of our students. Good initiatives by the staff also
inspire our children to do their best.
As a part of our
continual review of systems the updated Governance Manual has been
approved which outlines governance and management responsibilities. Our
10-year property plan has been approved so planning is underway to
improve our school assets and ensure the learning environments are
future proofed and sustainable. We are finalising the tender
documents of our new classroom and our expectation is for this to be
started in Term 3. The board invited Mr Gavin McKenzie from the
Ministry whose responsibility is school property in Southland to a
meeting to share with us general information regarding our school
assets. It was very beneficial and productive and it was
interesting to note that our new school classrooms are built to at
least 30% higher building standards than commercial standards. Hence,
the cost to build is so much greater.
The Board would
like to say a big thank you to the PTA who are a pleasure to work with
and their input into the school is greatly appreciated.
ERO is visiting us on the third week of Term 4 and we look forward to showing them what a great school we have.
The
Friday assemblies are a pleasure to attend along with those parents
that can come along as it reflects the general positive atmosphere our
school has. It’s great to see happy, inspired children. Together
we can all aim high – whaia atu te taumatu Janice McKerchar Chairperson
