    To all Winton Students.
Prize Giving speech from your departing President and Vice President 2010

Tena koutou tena koutou tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Winton School’s 2010 prize giving.

And we are off and racing to a flying start to 2010. With a great line up of Year 8’s led by the wonderful filly Miss Brown, we head into the start of what will be our final year at Winton Primary School.

Room 10 quickly got into the swing of campaigning for the President and Vice-President titles.  Posters and winning words around the school were proven to be valuable tactics.  It has been a privilege to work alongside Megan being Vice-President this year, as Megan and I have grown up together, and have always had a firm friendship.  Behind every good leader there is always a good supporter with helpful advice.  Thankyou Megan.
    Highlights of the year are:
    •    Year 7/8 moving into their new colorful classrooms – don’t they look great!
    •    Representing Winton School by attending the Young Leaders day in Dunedin, Logan, Hannah, Stew and I took away many wise words in becoming great leaders.  Keep and eye out for the next Prime Minister.
    •    Our Kapa Haka group was also a highlight for Winton School as it was the first time participating in the event, which was great to be involved in.  Our thanks to Miss Carran & Mr Chapman for their many hours of hard work to get us there.
    •    The Netball competition was a hoot playing against the teachers. Records have noted that the teachers won, but team 1 and others know that there was some constructive cheating that lead to them to taking the winning title.
    •    Both talent quests and disco’s showed the many talents that we have at Winton School, that we certainly do not see in the classroom.  Stew maybe you are a slight exception.  To disco Stew Bryan thanks again for your tasteful choice in music.
The biggest event for Year 8 this year was our camp to Deep Cove.  We learnt a lot about each other, like the 8 cans of diet coke Miss Brown had to get her through.  The many talents in our talent quest are still spoken of today.  To all the parents, Mrs Bell and Miss Brown thankyou for making it a wonderful Camp.

With all these highlights and great events that have happened at Winton School this year, I would like to start by thanking the Board of Trustees for the commitment to the success of the school.  Mrs McKerchar you have continued to lead a great team.
Thanks to the P.T.A. for the many events that they have put on and made them enjoyable and worthwhile.  Mrs Milne you started the year off to a good start, followed by Mrs Hume who has continued to pick up where everything was left off.

Mr Smith, Miss Brown and fellow staff members a huge thankyou for your support, encouragement and high standard of teaching throughout our school life.  We wish you and the school all the very best for 2011 and beyond in everything you do.  Many thanks to our parents, students and our class members, you have constantly been there and made our final year one that won’t be forgotten.

As we make the final turn on the home straight of our schooling at Winton School it is hard to believe that the year has gone by so fast.  This would have to be one of the best years since I have been at Winton School, for the opportunities that have been given to myself and others.  As we leave tonight and we head into Secondary school, where things will be a lot different.  We will constantly look back on the BIG part that Winton School has played in our schooling years.  To the new upcoming President and Vice President, all the best and we hope you have as much fun and enjoyment as we have had.  We wish you a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and all the best for 2011.  THANKYOU

Next year will bring many new experiences for all of you, some good, some bad but stay positive as something better will be just around the corner. We also want to encourage you to be leaders as it is better to be independent and to lead than it is to follow.  It has been a great experience for us to be your school President and Vice-President.
